From the search box to the finished result

Why AI doesn't search, but works things out with you

~3 min reading timeExcerpt

Imagine you have to hold a difficult conversation this week. The familiar route: you type “conflict conversation tips” into a search engine, open five articles and laboriously translate general advice to your own situation. There is a much shorter route.

An AI such as Claude, Copilot, ChatGPT or Gemini works fundamentally differently from a search engine. These tools don't look up what others once wrote – they work out a new result together with you. You describe what should come out at the end, and you receive a draft tailored to your situation.

This difference seems small, yet it changes how you approach tasks: the laborious translating of other people's advice becomes a draft you can work with straight away. All it takes is a small shift in thinking – and a feel for when a search is enough and when the AI does the real work with you.

Finding is not working it out

A search engine is a directory. It shows you pages that already exist – written by people who don't know your situation. That is exactly right when such a page is what you need: opening hours, an official requirement, a product review.

An AI belongs in a different category of tool. It doesn't point you to answers, it works on your task: it drafts texts, organises thoughts, sketches plans and thinks along with you at the points where you get stuck on your own. The difference is like that between a library catalogue and a partner who thinks with you: the catalogue tells you where something is written down – the partner sits down with you and works it out.

Method · Work it out, don't search

  1. 1

Search or work it out? Before every task, ask yourself: am I looking for an existing source – or should a new result be created? Sources are what the search engine finds. Results are what the AI works out with you.

  2. 2

Name the result. Tell the AI which finished result should come out – with your situation instead of keywords. “Conflict conversation tips” becomes: “Draft me a conversation guide for a difficult conversation with a supplier.”

Prompt template

Replace the placeholders with your situation – two or three concrete details are enough.

From the search box to the finished result

You are an experienced conversation coach. Draft me a conversation guide for a conversation about [CONFLICT TOPIC] with [CONVERSATION PARTNER]. Goal of the conversation: [GOAL]. Give me a calm opening sentence, three key points and a fair close.

Key takeaway

A search engine shows you what others have written. An AI works out with you what you really need.
